We thought it was about time to properly introduce you to 542. Here is a little insight into the transformation from a disused motorbike workshop, to the fabulous space you see today.

We took this arch on in 2020 along with the other arches which form an intrinsic part of 100 Barrington. Our primary focus initially was to create 100 Barrington, so 542 took a little bit of a back seat. At the beginning of 2024, we were ready to start works on 542.

Vision, imagination and a lot of hard work went into the transformation of the arch. The main challenge when thinking about the design of the venue, was how to turn this cold industrial arch into a cosy space which feels more like a private living room.

The dividing wall between the entrance area and the main room was a late addition to the design of the space, but ended up becoming one of the main features. There were various ideas when considering what to do with the large expanse of wall. In the end we all loved the idea of creating something special and the concept of the hand painted mural was formed.

The search for an artist to paint the mural happened to coincide with the script writers' strike. We were fortunate enough to be introduced to Adam Cutts, who would usually be found painting on a film set, but was available and agreed to take on the project. It was truly incredible to see him work. We witnessed the progress from a blank plastered wall to the hand drawn outline of the design and then the painting process. We were thrilled to see the spectacular end result!

A dividing wall created a spacious entrance area, the advantage of the industrial arches is that they stay cool throughout the year, so much to the delight of our in-house sommelier, we had provided the perfect space for our wine cellar.

Once we had our cellar, it was time to think about the bar, which is a bespoke design. We wanted it to sit comfortably in the space and we put a lot of thought into deciding what materials to use. The choice of copper for the bar top was made due to the warm tone of the metal and the way it weathers over time. Aged glass provides the backdrop for the bar, reflecting the warm lamp light in the space.

It was important to think about the materials used in the venue, as we wanted to achieve warmth and comfort. The use of fabric was one of the first ideas and that is why the heavy dark green velvet drapes line the walls of the main room. The choice of flooring was also important, so we opted for oak floorboards.

There are often areas in a venue that can be overlooked, including the toilets, but we were determined to put every effort into ensuring that the same attention to detail was focused throughout. We found reclaimed doors from an old bank in Brighton, which we have used between the main room and entrance into the toilet area. The design of the mosaic tiles on the floor is based on a traditional pattern and every detail was thought about when choosing the fixtures and fittings.

The furniture in the venue is all reclaimed and some of the items were reupholstered, giving them a new lease of life. Many of the lamps are period pieces which were purchased in Los Angeles, where they had been used on film sets. Having finished their career in Hollywood, they now rest in retirement in 542.

We loved the idea of having a piano in the room, so we rescued a lovely old piano which lives in the space. It is tuned and ready to play, so if any of your guests have the inclination, it is ready and waiting.

We hope that this has provided you with a little glimpse into our journey with 542. We are so excited that the space is up and running and are looking forward to seeing it host some fabulous parties, family gatherings and celebrations!
