Partner Stories #5: Q&A with soulful music lover, DJ Jason Eli

Updated: Jul 24, 2023

From residencies at Ministry of Sound to parties at 100 Barrington, DJ Jason Eli knows how to get everyone out on the dance-floor (& keep them there). The first time he DJ’d at our venue back in July 2022, it was one of the most electric atmospheres and packed dance-floors we had ever witnessed in the space.

We couldn’t let him leave without getting a hold of his contact details. He has DJ’d at Barrington many more times since then, and continued to fill the floor with happy dancers. He has a brilliant ability to read the crowd and match the songs to the vibe on the dance-floor, amongst many other great qualities he has as a DJ & a person. Great times are guaranteed when DJ Jason Eli is on the decks, and we are thrilled to have him on board as one of our preferred partners and to be able to recommend him to our clients for their celebrations here!

In this next instalment of our “Partner Stories” series, we will be giving you a glimpse into the experiences & influences that have shaped Jason as a DJ, and will also be sharing his handpicked selection of songs that reflect him & his artistry. We recently had the opportunity to catch up with Jason who kindly took the time to answer a Q&A for us, which we are very excited to be sharing with you.

How did you first get into music production & DJing?

DJ DJing at a party at 100 Barrington, a venue in Brixton, London

Through my older cousins. They both were musicians and wrote their own music. I used to visit them as a kid and watch them play live funk & disco and was inspired to do the same. Also my Mum forced me to go have piano lessons, which I’m very glad for! I also had a serious record collecting habit from the age of 16 and a mate of mine said “why don’t you start DJing?”. I thought it would be a great way to pay for my vinyl habit! So I sent my DJ mix to three clubs in London and they all called me back with offers of work. One of the clubs was Ministry Of Sound and I ended up playing there as resident DJ every Saturday. I never stopped DJing after that.

What are some of the highlights of your career so far?

1. Remixing Whitney Houston’s “Your Love Is My Love” with my production partner and seeing it get in the charts

2. DJing at Notting Hill Carnival

Any particularly memorable experiences you’ve had working with an artist?

Writing music with Sharlene Hector (vocalist for Basement Jaxx) was pretty amazing. Amazing voice and amazing musical ideas.

Who are some of your biggest influences musically?

Louie Vega, Earth Wind & Fire, Prince

What do you enjoy most about performing as a DJ?

Seeing people have a great time.

How do you tailor your sets to fit the energy of different crowds?

I just pay attention to the vibe on the dance-floor as well as who’s on the dance-floor and listen to requests without playing music that doesn’t fit.

Which artists are you listening to the most at the moment? (Old or new!)

Sade, Tall Black Guy, Mndsgn

Jason’s passion for music & love of making people dance is inspiring, and after reading his answers to our Q&A, we just had to go and put some Prince & Sade on. Which got us thinking, how about a DJ Jason Eli soundtrack to go alongside this post, which will not only give people even more insight into his influences & style, but will also get people grooving along. To our delight, Jason sent over a selection of tracks which we have added below -enjoy!
